Bugs with a Bad Reputation

Stinging bees, scary spiders, and destructive termites! These pests have a bad reputation and usually for a good reason. We have seen their effects in our human world and we have little to no tolerance for them especially in our living quarters.

But have you ever wondered what they are doing on this planet? Each species, or pest, does have a purpose in nature aside from tormenting us with infestations, pathogens, and structural damage. Let’s take a look at a few of the commonly shunned pests in the District of Columbia area and what their purpose is in the natural world. 

Honeybees

The sound of a bee swarming near your head is nothing short of shoulder cringing. However, honeybees and other species of bees do serve a few important purposes in nature which are probably known to many. Honeybees are known for the pollination of plants and flowers as well as the production of honey.

In order for plants and flowers to bloom and spread, they must be pollinated, which leaves a lot of work for the honeybee. As they are gathering and spreading pollen, they also collect nectar, which they are able to process and store as honey. So aside from any possible stings, which only come from the female bees, we should be thankful for this pest, unless of course they are making their nest in our home.

Termites

Termites are often associated with the destruction of wood work. They form colonies with thousands and sometimes millions of insects all working together to destroy wood and unfortunately our home or business could be the target.

However, in the natural world and mainly warmer areas, termites help the ecosystems of forests. The result of them chewing wood is to break down dead cellulose, an insoluble substance, into basic elements that plants and animals can then use. So although termites are detrimental to some structures, they are doing their job.  

Spiders

These creepy looking, eight legged creatures seem to cause us a lot of anxiety and stress. Spiders are found all over the country and there are thousands of different species of spiders around the world. Although a bit alarming at first sight, there is a benefit to having spiders near your home, just not in it.

Spiders feed on flies and other small insects, which is good news if you have a garden. Some insects can ruin flower or vegetable gardens, but not if a spider is watching guard. Spiders do not seek to bite humans either, but even if they do their venom is not likely to harm you. There are very few types of spiders whose venom would pose a serious risk to humans, but for the most part they are just plain creepy looking. 

After taking a look at some common species we love to hate, you can see that they do serve a purpose aside from being a nuisance. The problem is when these species are trying to invade our homes and personal space.
