A strong relationship between the new variant of COVID-19 identified as Omicron and mice has been found!
Professor Kristian Andersen—an immunologist at the Scripps Research Institute in California—said that the virus that would become Omicron may have evolved in rodents.
The theory states that an animal may have picked up SARS-Cov-2, -the virus that causes COVID-19-, around mid-2020, and after accumulating many mutations in the animal, it would have passed to humans through what is referred to as reverse zoonosis.
In other words, the virus may have transferred from humans to mice and rats where it mutated and then was transferred back to humans around October 2021.
What happened in between these two periods is the mystery behind what has made Omicron so different.
